A flurry of goals, all coming within roughly six minutes of one another, helped lift the San Benito girls’ soccer team to its fifth straight win on Wednesday when it silenced host Salinas by a 4-0 margin in Tri-County Athletic League play.

With its 12th shutout of the season, San Benito improves to 7-0-1 in the TCAL and 11-0-5 overall, and keeps pace with rival and undefeated Gilroy (6-0-1 TCAL, 9-2-4) atop the league standings.

The two teams will meet up next Tuesday in Gilroy for a match that could very well be the deciding factor in who will win the TCAL crown this year. San Benito and Gilroy previously tied 1-1 on Jan. 19.

Head coach Ben Alvarez said Gilroy and Salinas are the two biggest threats to San Benito this season, but the Balers have proven they have the Cowboys’ number this year.

After previously defeating the third-place Cowboys by a 4-0 margin on Jan. 12, San Benito did it again on Wednesday behind a two-goal, one-assist effort by Hannah Cobb.

The senior mid set up Karly Leon in the 32nd minute to put San Benito ahead 1-0, then scored back-to-back unassisted goals in the 38th and 44th minutes.

Berniece Bribiesca tacked on the game’s fourth goal in the 63rd minute.

The loss drops Salinas to 4-3-1 in the TCAL, 11-3-2 overall.

San Benito will now set its sights on Gilroy, which owns a 6-1-2 record against the Balers since the 2006-07 season.

Match time is 5:15 p.m. at the Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.
