A pair of second half goals lifted the Gavilan College men’s soccer team past College of the Sequoias 2-0 in the team’s season opener Tuesday in Gilroy.

“It was a good start against a decent side,” Gavilan head coach Justin Johnson said. “There are definitely some things we need to work on, but that’s to be expected.”

After a scoreless first half, Ramiro Lechuga tallied to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. Fabian Ruiz was credited with the assist.

Andy Moya provided the second goal, which came unassisted.

“We showed that we are a fit team with both of our goals coming in the second half like that,” Johnson said.

Gavilan is on the road for back-to-back tilts Friday at Oxnard and Saturday against College of the Canyons.

“We will be tested by two very good schools this weekend,” Johnson added.

The Rams return home for more nonconference action Sept. 7.
