Anzar’s Myra Quezada managed to pocket the game-winner in the 70th minute to lift the Hawks past visiting Pajaro Valley 1-0 in non-conference play on Tuesday — a game that appeared to be heading toward a scoreless result.
With just 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Hawks were awarded a free kick from about 25 yards out. Anzar’s Sydnee Masuen then sent her offering to the far post, where a sprinting Quezada caught up to it just in time.
Quezada’s goal was said to be a simple chest-bump that found its way into the net, Anzar head coach Carlos Flores said.
“Myra made the right cut at the right time,” Flores said. “[Masuen] sent it to the back post and no one was really on Myra.
“It looked like we were going to tie. But the goal came and we were able to get the win.”
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half. Flores said the Hawks had several scoring opportunities in the first 40 minutes of play, but simply couldn’t find the back of the net.
The game began to even up in the second half as Pajaro Valley was able to make plenty of substitutions, while Anzar was without four of its players.
Quezada’s goal in the 70th minute came at the right time; Anzar was shutout in its previous contest against Aptos. The win improves the Hawks to 4-3 overall.
Anzar is off until Jan. 13 when they will open Coastal Athletic League play against Calvary Christian. Kick-off is 3:30 p.m.
