For the second game in a row, the San Benito High girls soccer team battled to a scoreless tie with a non-conference opponent.
Two days removed from tying host Milpitas 0-0 on Saturday, the Balers returned to the pitch on Tuesday and posted a similar result against Sobrato at the Morgan Hill Sports Complex.
It was the third straight year the two teams have met in the preseason, and the third straight year the game has ended in a tie.
“I think this was the toughest team we’ve played so far,” said San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez, whose team not only remains undefeated at 2-0-2, but is also flawless in the goals against department, having not allowed a single score to any of its four opponents this season.
“They came at us but our defense was working hard,” Alvarez added. “We were putting the same pressure on their defense, but neither of us put it in the back of the net.”
Sobrato took more shots than San Benito by an 8-5 margin, Alvarez said. The head coach said after the tie with Milpitas that he’d like his team to take about 20 shots on net.
“We can’t score if we don’t take the shots,” Alvarez said. “But overall, it was a very good learning experience for some of my freshmen girls. The whole team played disciplined.”
The Balers are expected to play another strong opponent on Wednesday, when they will return to Hollister to take on Santa Cruz in a non-conference match. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m.
