Different day. Similar result.

For the third straight game, the San Benito girls soccer team finished a non-conference match in a scoreless tie, as it battled with visiting Santa Cruz to a 0-0 result on Wednesday in Hollister.

The scoreless match follows San Benito’s 0-0 tie against Sobrato on Tuesday and its scoreless bout with Milpitas on Saturday. It also keeps the Balers undefeated on the year at 2-0-3 overall.

But San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez knows the Balers will need to find the back of the net in order to post some victories before the TCAL season opens.

“But that darn crossbar keeps getting in the way,” Alvarez said. “We’re taking the shots. They just aren’t going in.”

A scoreless tie is perhaps a welcomed result after last season’s outcome, when Santa Cruz posted a 5-1 victory over San Benito in non-conference play.

Wednesday’s 0-0 result was simply business as usual for the San Benito defense, though. In five games this season, or roughly 400 minutes of soccer, the Balers have yet to have allowed a goal.

“Santa Cruz is a good team. We were prepared for it and we actually played very, very good,” Alvarez said. “Compared to how we played last year, we actually dominated. I was very happy with the way the girls played.”

The non-conference schedule will continue to ramp up on Saturday, when the Balers will open the Burlingame Tournament against Mercy at San Mateo High. Kickoff is 12:30 p.m.

San Benito will continue the tournament on Monday against Mills and on Wednesday against El Camino. Both games will be held at Burlingame High at 3:30 p.m.

“I’m expecting some good soccer,” Alvarez said.
