Alexis Sicairos scored four goals, including the equalizer during stoppage time, and the Anzar Hawks battled back to force a 5-5 tie against host York on Friday, snapping a six-game losing streak in the process.
“It was a big morale-booster for our guys,” Anzar head coach Jeremiah Martinez said. “It was down to the final minutes — very, very intense.”
Sicairos’ fourth goal in the game was netted on a free kick from about 20 yards out, Martinez said, and came approximately one minute and 20 seconds into stoppage time.
“The kick went right through the goalie’s legs,” Martinez added, noting the game officially ended about one minute later.
Sicairos also scored Anzar’s first two goals in the first half, as the Hawks trailed York 3-2 heading into the break. But on an assist from Glen Alameda, Anzar’s Basilio Mehia knotted the game at 3-all just 10 minutes into the second half.
“There was never more than a one-goal difference in the game,” Martinez said.
The Hawks took a 4-3 lead off a penalty kick from Sicairos, but York not only battled back to tie the game at 4-all, but took a 5-4 lead with about six minutes remaining in regulation.
“Even the other coach was like, ‘Wow,'” Martinez said. “In that second half, we really stepped it up and put a lot of pressure on them.”
Anzar had 38 shots on net in the game, 23 of which came in the second half alone.
The Hawks are now 0-2-1 in the Coastal Athletic League and 0-6-1 overall. The team will visit Pacific Grove on Monday at 3:30 p.m. in a make-up game that was postponed from last Wednesday.
