Despite a halftime deficit, the San Benito boys soccer team scored three second-half goals to leapfrog visiting Carmel 3-1 on Tuesday in non-league action in Hollister.

It was the Balers’ first game since their Dec. 16 contest against King City, but Tuesday’s end result followed suit with the team’s previous five matches.

San Benito is now a perfect 6-0 on the season.

The visiting Padres did take a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute of the first half, though, a half San Benito head coach Tony Deras said was very much back and forth.

“We attacked them. They attacked us,” Deras said. “But in the second half, it was our game pretty much.”

The Balers knotted the match at 1-all just two minutes into the second half when Oscar Gonzalez delivered a pass from the right side to Francisco Palomino, who found the back of the net from just outside the 18.

Roughly 18 minutes later, in the 60th minute of the game, San Benito took the lead for good when Steven Mercado sent a cross pass from the left side and Martin Navarro hit over the keeper and in for a 2-1 Baler lead.

Palomino then assisted on a Ricardo Roque goal later in the game to stake San Benito to a 3-1 cushion.

“We just played on their half of the field and kept attacking and attacking until we finished,” Deras said.

The Balers are back on their normal schedule for the remainder of the season. The team will visit Stevenson on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. before opening league play next Tuesday at home to North Salinas.
