The Anzar High softball team improved to 3-0 in Coastal Athletic League play on Tuesday with a convincing 20-8 victory over host York, in a game that was called following the fifth inning.
Tiffany Maileua connected on two doubles and two singles and knocked in six runs for the Hawks on Tuesday, while teammate Julia Katz went 5 of 5 at the plate with three RBIs.
“And she’s been awesome behind the plate,” Anzar head coach Felipe Vallejo said of Katz, his freshman catcher. “She’s learned a lot the first couple of games and is a real asset to the team.”

As for Maileua, Vallejo said of Tuesday’s game, “She was on fire.”
Anzar jumped out to an 11-0 lead through the first three frames when York posted a 3-spot in the home half of the inning. But before York could tack on five more runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Hawks responded with six run in the top half and controlled a comfortable 17-8 lead following four complete innings.
“A lot of drop balls and errors, that’s what killed us right there,” Vallejo said of the fourth inning.
No matter. Starting pitcher Hakima Hossainzadeh tossed a complete game, allowing eight runs in six hits while walking two and striking out six.
“She’s been awesome, and a big improvement to our team,” Vallejo said.
The Hawks lost two players to graduation last year, but Vallejo added that everyone has stepped up so far this season. “Everybody’s doing a little bit,” he said.
“I’m just happy everyone is hitting,” he added.
The sizable win Tuesday over York was the exact opposite of what transpired last week against Greenfield, which led 3-0 through two innings before the Hawks mounted a comeback.
Three runs in the third inning knotted the game at 3-all, a score that held until extra innings when Cassandra Vallejo knocked in Hossainzadeh for the game-winning run in the eighth inning en route to a 4-3 victory.
Maileau and Hossainzadeh combined in the circle to keep Greenfield to just three runs.
In its first game of the season, Anzar defeated Marina 17-12, plating runs in each and every inning, including a 7-spot in the final frame.
Hossainzadeh tossed a complete game against Marina, striking out eight.
The Hawks will return to the field Thursday when they will host Trinity Christian in San Juan Bautista. First pitch is 4 p.m.
