Installation expected to save district millions over the decades
Solar panels are being installed at eight Hollister School District sites and the district office this summer as part of a power contract that is expected to save millions of dollars in energy costs over a 30-year period.
The panels will be located on canopies over parking areas, playgrounds or on vacant land at Calaveras, Marguerite Maze, R.O. Hardin, Rancho San Justo, Sunnyslope, Ladd Lane, Cerra Vista and Gabilan Hills schools, along with the district headquarters on Union Road.
“We want to have all of the major work and construction up and done when school starts Aug. 17,” said Jack Bachofer, chief business official of the Hollister School District. “We’ll go mid- to late September and the benefits should start shortly thereafter.”
While ClearSpot Energy Inc. has predicted the district will save up to $18 million over a 30-year period due to reduced energy costs, Bachofer said he is “not in a position to quantify what those savings will be for our utility bill.”
“We’ll see how it tracks,” he added. “We know we should be saving; we just don’t know how much.”
