The Community Alliance with Family Farmers is inviting local
growers and ranchers to the third annual Farm Fiesta in
Watsonville.
The Community Alliance with Family Farmers is inviting local growers and ranchers to the third annual Farm Fiesta in Watsonville.
The event is designed to celebrate small farms and the Central Coast community. Visitors can sample from an extravaganza of local foods and organic products; learn about tortilla making, farm animals and native plants; and take farm tours. Also, there will be arts and crafts and games for children.
Visitors can meet local family farmers while having fun on the farm.
The free event will feature a variety of viable, innovative solutions for some of the country’s most pressing problems with health, environment and food security.
Farm Fiesta will be held from noon to 5 p.m. June 14 at Live Earth Farm. Live Earth Farm is located at Pioneer Ranch on 51 Pioneer Road in Watsonville. A shuttle to the farm will be provided.
Some of the featured topics include:
– Farm to School: In response to the need for better nutrition, local organic farmers are working with schools in Salinas and Santa Cruz, to get kids involved in growing food and eating better.
– Local Beef: The recent discovery of mad-cow disease in Alberta, Canada has renewed concerns about the long-term safety of the nation’s food supply. Mad Cow disease is believed to spread through cow feed made with protein and bone meal made from mammals.
An alternative is locally raised, grass-fed beef that is free of animal protein, antibiotics and growth hormones.
