It’s time for the King City fair

Can you believe it’s fair time again in the Salinas Valley already? The timing is just about right, just about the time the good old Salinas Valley wind really kicks in, fair time rolls right in as well. The fair begins next week (yes, I said next week!) beginning on Thursday, May 17th and going through Sunday, May 20th. Be sure to stop by to check out all the great exhibits and to support your favorite 4-H and FFA exhibitors.

I spoke to Donna Palmer last week who filled me in on what her grandchildren have been up to. Allie, a Bitterwater graduate, will be graduating from high school this year in Reno, Nev. Her big sister, Aimee graduated from the same high school last year but has made her way to the big city of New York City. She is working full time right now but plans to attend nursing school at Syracuse University in the fall. What a culture shock for her, going from Bitterwater to Nevada to New York City. Way to go Aimee, good luck and enjoy your time there. Lucas is currently attending high school in Nevada while Ryan is on his way home from deployment in Iraq. George and Donna have some great grandkids to brag about and they have been wonderful, supportive grandparents to them all.

Sierra Jo and I headed up to Hollister last Thursday evening to watch the Monterey Toreadors take on the Hollister Haybalers Boys Volleyball game. My nephew is a senior on the Monterey team and this was to be his last season game as a senior. It was an exciting, must win game for the Haybalers, but Monterey beat them in the end. The Toreadors went 14-0 in the regular season and are now headed to the playoffs. Boys volleyball is a very popular sport in the bigger schools and a very competitive one as well. I was very impressed with my nephew and his teammates. They should do very well in the playoffs.

Many students from Jefferson, Panoche, Tres Pinos and Willow Grove Schools will have some art on display at the Zeum, a museum for art and technology located in San Francisco near the Moscone Center. The theme for the art chosen was rural art that tied into Earth Day. Students from Panoche School were going on a field trip to see their work in the big city last week. Congratulations to all those who had art on display, and once again, thanks to the E-Cubed foundation for making the art program possible.

There is a new Avon lady in South County these days. Sami O’Connor has started selling Avon to help pay for college expenses. If anyone would like a catalog, give Sami a call.

Kanani Barbree hosted a spring open house last Saturday at the Garden House in King City. Despite the wind, it was a beautiful day and she had a great turnout. Now is the time to plant your spring garden and she has plenty of great plants, flowers and vegetables to get you started.

Don’t forget your Mom this weekend as Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 13th. Best wishes for a great day to all moms out there. Have a great week, and, if you have any news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected].
