Happy Holidays South County! Hope everyone had a safe and Happy Thanksgiving. I was so swamped getting everything ready for our big day here that I missed my deadline for last week’s column. I’ll have to double up on a few things this week!

Allie Palmer had a not so welcome surprise a few weeks ago while at school. She started having severe stomach pains and when the school couldn’t reach her grandmother, Donna Palmer, to come get her. Teacher’s aide Heike Baumgartner rushed Allie into town to the Doctors office. Once there they were told that Allie needed an emergency appendectomy! After Allie’s Aunt, Alma Carlson, tracked down Donna at the grocery store, Allie was taken into surgery and had her appendix removed. Quite a day for a young 8th grader! Each of the students at Bitterwater Tully School made get well cards for Allie and the nurses hung each one of them on the hospitals walls. Allie was home the next day and back to school a few days later.

David and Cynnie O’connor celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary a few weeks ago. They had a nice prime rib dinner with the kids at home then Cynnie, her mom and kids all headed down to Avila Beach for the weekend while David hung out around the house.

Now on to some Thanksgiving celebrations from last week: Jeff and Jean Schmidt hosted a houseful of family for their turkey dinner. Jeff, Shari and Melissa Popoe came down from Truckee, son Steve arrived from the Bay Area and

Steve, Sue, James, Jeff and Matt Supancic came over from the other valley.

Lance and Jessica Miller had dinner with Lance’s mom, dad and grandmother, who arrived Wednesday morning from Utah. They headed back home to Utah on Friday morning. Lance and Jessica tried to hit the early bird specials at the shopping centers in Salinas on Friday morning but found that they weren’t “early enough” as all the deals were already gone!

Joann Falsey hosted Thanksgiving at her home this year with a houseful of friends. Everyone will be thankful to know that little Rhett has been declared “cancer free.” What a Thanksgiving blessing that is.

Todd and I hosted a houseful of family at our house on Thanksgiving Day.

Total served for the day was 33. My sister and her husband from Oakland came, along with my brother from Fallon, Nev., my aunt and uncle from Los Angeles and my parents and grandmother from Salinas. Todd’s family included Vern and Jo Ann Scattini, Nessen Schmidt, Gregg, Sami Jo, Rory and Jo Ellen Johnsen along with Gregg’s dad Jim, sister Cindy and Mark, Frank, Betsy, Nathan, Grady and Ryan Roth along with Betsy’s sister Kathy and brother Pat and his children, and Les Sans and Betty Gargano. Hope I didn’t leave anyone off that list! Unfortunately the weather was beautiful enough for the kids to play outside all day and leave us grownups to watching football and visiting. Hopefully we’ll get some rain this week.

Les and Betty headed to Vegas the weekend before Thanksgiving, where Les took in a lesson at the Richard Petty School of Racing. One lesson and now he’s hooked! He had a great time and rumor has it that he was the fastest one (and the oldest student) there! Now he’s planning on heading back for a two-day school. As long as he keeps his fast driving on the track and doesn’t practice on Highway 25 I think we’re all safe. While there, Les and Betty met up with Jerilynn Sans and Shelly Franklin. They all celebrated their Thanksgiving together while there.

Last Saturday we went in to Hollister to go see the movie Santa Clause 2 at the Granada Theater. That was a treat; we’ve never been to the Granada before. What a great old theater. Thanks to the owners for keeping it up and running. King City had an old theater like that but the owners let it get too run down and the city didn’t want to revamp it. What a shame, too. Anyway, if you’ve never been to the Granada, give it a try, it was nice, clean and you sure can’t beat the price.

Sunday we went on the hunt for the perfect Christmas tree. It was only supposed to take a couple of hours, as we needed to be home by 1 p.m. to watch the Broncos whip the Chargers (ha ha) but thanks to those nice little showers we had the day before, we ran into a little trouble on the hillsides and me and the kids decided to walk down the hill. After long hunts on the hillside, we ended up finding the perfect tree right at the bottom of the hill. The way the Broncos played, we should have just stayed out tree hunting all day anyway!

The countdown to the Holidays has begun! Since Thanksgiving was so late this year, there are actually six fewer days shopping than there usually is, so don’t put off your shopping too long! To put you in the Holiday mood, the Bitterwater Tully School will be hosting its annual Christmas Program on Dec. 13 at Tully Hall. The program begins at 6 p.m. with deserts, refreshments and a visit from Santa to follow the program. I will be hosting December’s hot lunch at the school on Dec. 12 at 11:30. If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by.

Hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving Holidays, and, if you have any news you’d like to share, give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected].
