Lots of excitement in South County

Whew, I barely got this column off before deadline this week. I barely had enough time to get home and write it before I’m off again. It was a busy weekend around here.

The Monterey County Cattlemen’s Association held its 32nd annual Cattlemen’s Day Roping and Ranch Rodeo last weekend at the fairgrounds in King City. It was a very successful but HOT weekend full of fun. Congratulations to Joe Spencer for winning the All-Around title and the saddle that was given in memory of South County Cattleman, Walter Basham. Some of those competing from South County included: the Sans family, the Hurley family, the Brewen family, the Roth family, Nessen Schmidt, Vern and Jo Ann Scattini, the Abercrombie family, Frank and Cindy Johnson, Carlos Castillo, the Barrington family, Joe Spencer, Audra Bourdett, the Sabin family and many others. A huge congratulations goes out to Brody Sans for winning first and second in the junior calf branding with his partners Mattie Barrington and Sara Avila.

It was so nice to come home from Cattlemen’s and to be able to watch my favorite show, Sunday Night Football. Don’t you just love football season? I even love the music leading up to the actual games, it just puts me in such a great mood! Unfortunately, my Sunday night football evening didn’t turn out too great and Buddy and Brody decided they wanted to “be boys” and cause Todd and I a little grief. The boys went on a little four-wheeler ride and Buddy ended up in the hospital that night with a compound fracture in his ankle. We spent four hours in the King City hospital before being transported by ambulance up to Salinas Valley Memorial in the middle of the night. Buddy had surgery the next morning and will be up there for a few days. So, as soon as I send this off, I’m back to the hospital to watch Monday Night Football (and to see the Broncos defeat the dreaded Raiders) with my boy. It was a hard lesson learned for both boys, but, thankfully it was only his ankle and not his neck or his head. It could have been a lot worse.

Besides all that excitement, birthday wishes go out to Taylor Jo Hurley who celebrated her birthday Sept. 5 and to Candace Brewen who celebrated Sept. 8.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Denise Donham and her family on the sudden loss of Denise’s sister last week. We’re thinking of you Denise.

I’m sure there’s plenty more news to write about, but, I’ve got to get back to the hospital. Have a great week and be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected] with any news you’d like to share.
