Birthdays abound in South County

Can you believe it’s the middle of July already? Summer is actually half way over; before you know it, it will be Christmas time again!

The weather has been pretty cooperative so far this summer. We’ve had a few hot streaks, but not as bad as it’s been in the past. Hopefully the mild weather may be an indication of a really wet winter!

Birthday wishes go out this week to several South County residents. Sami O’Connor celebrated her 20th birthday July 7, while her little sister, Kassie, celebrated her 12th birthday July 9. Grady Roth celebrated his birthday July 5 and J.W. Brewen celebrated his birthday July 11.

Jeff and Jean Schmidt arrived home last week from a three week vacation to Switzerland and Spain. They took their granddaughter, Melissa Popnoe, on the trip as her high school graduation present. Joining them on the trip was their son, Steve. They just arrived home so I haven’t had a chance to talk to them yet, but I’m sure I’ll have some trip details in next week’s column.

Baseball season has officially come to an end in our household. Brody’s All-Star team finished their season with a record of 2-2 and Buddy’s team finished up last week with an overall record of 4-4. Now that the season is officially over our summer can finally begin! It’s always bittersweet when baseball season ends, because of course we want the kids to keep on winning, but living out of town as far as we do, it’s always nice when the traveling back and forth to town and tournaments is over.

Congratulations to Allen Umbarger and the 13-year old Pony All-Stars. They went a long way for a small town team and they showed the bigger teams that they can play with the best of them. They have a lot to be proud of and all the parents are very proud of the boys. Now, it’s on to football!

John and Susan Nino branded some of their calves last week at the Sheilds and Pellegrini ranches. Some of those helping out included Tom, Mike, Rob, Johnny and Annie Nino, J.W. Brewen and the girls, John Brewen, Casey Sabin, Stacey Schmidt, Eric Isaacson, Todd, Wendy, Sierra Jo and Brody Sans and Audra Bourdett. There was a flock of little kids on hand as well, and with all the Ninos, that’s a ton of little kids! And they are all so cute and fun to be around. The holidays must be a blast around the Nino households!

The Salinas Rodeo starts this week, so if it gets too hot in South County, you can always head over to Salinas to take in the rodeo and cool off while you’re there.

Have a great week, and be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at
