Week’s rain brings smiles to South County
Hooray! The rain has finally arrived in South County, and not a
day too soon. It’s been a long, dry three weeks out here but the
rain has sure improved the looks and moods around here these days!
It’s supposed to warm up this week so the grass should really grow.
Besides the much needed rain, it was very busy in South County last
week between birthdays, break-ins, basketball and unfortunately
funerals, folks were kept busy all week long.

Hooray! The rain has finally arrived in South County, and not a day too soon. It’s been a long, dry three weeks out here but the rain has sure improved the looks and moods around here these days! It’s supposed to warm up this week so the grass should really grow. Besides the much needed rain, it was very busy in South County last week between birthdays, break-ins, basketball and unfortunately funerals, folks were kept busy all week long.

Some rain totals to report on include Tracie and Mike Egglston (as reported by Megan) received about 3 inches up in Lewis Creek while Bill and Robin Rist reported approximately a little over an inch at their place on Lonoak Road. Jeff and Jean Schmidt reported 1.75 on Sunday afternoon but we had quite of bit of rain on Sunday evening so I’m sure their total went up some. We had right at 1.80 for the entire storm while Alex and Stacey Schmidt reported 1.50 inches as of Sunday morning.

Jeff Schmidt celebrated his 85th birthday last Saturday afternoon with several family members and friends. The party was held at the St. John’s Church Hall and Jeff and Jean arrived via horsedrawn carriage, courtesy of Nessen Schmidt. Some of those on hand to help Jeff celebrate his big day included Amy Lou Hall, Bob Schmidt and Maggie, Ted and Diane Schmidt, the Popnoe family, Supanich family, Steve Schmidt, Vern and Jo Ann Scattini, Laurence and Donna Hansen, Albert and Mimi Bray, Lynette Hurley, Nessen Schmidt and Val Bassetti, Elmer Franscioni, Kathy and Jim Chisum, Hal and Sarah Franscioni, John and Janet Buttgereit, Doris and Terry Schmidt, Dan and Barbara Schmidt, Brooks and Cheri Schmidt, Elaine Castle, and Nancy Hillam. Jeff’s real birthday is on the 27th. Happy birthday Jeff, here’s wishing you many, many more.

Congratulations go out to Wyatt Bourdet and his team for winning the Red Bluff Ranch Rodeo last weekend. Wyatt and his teammates, Chance Jackson and Frankie Martines, won the team award, and Wyatt was voted All-Around Cowboy by everyone there and his horse was named All-Around Ranch Horse as well. That’s quite an honor as that is a very big event. Congratulations Wyatt, you’ve made San Benito County very proud and those are very well deserved honors.

Bill Rist informed me that Tully Hall was broken into last Saturday night and the entire sound system belonging to Bill and Robin’s ministry was stolen. They just recently purchased that sound system so it is a big loss to the church. Fortunately, the sheriff’s department was able to get some good fingerprints, and, thanks to the rain, some good tire tracks were left in the mud as well so they should be able to find the thieves soon. It’s pretty pathetic to steal from anyone, especially from the local church. I hope they find the culprits soon and punish them accordingly.

The Lady Mustangs basketball team is on a roll. They are now 5-1 in league play. Carolyn Madson had an awesome game last week with a season high 26 points against Carmel. The girls also had an awesome win against Stevenson last week, putting an end to Stevenson’s 27-game winning streak. This week the girls are at home on Monday and Friday nights.

Chalone Peaks Middle School will be hosting a Swiss sausage barbecue this Sunday to benefit their sports program. The event will be held at the Safeway parking lot from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday. There will also be baked goods for sale as well. Be sure to stop by, pick up some sausage sandwiches and goodies, then head home to watch the Super Bowl.

South County laid two great men to rest last week. Jay Brazelton was laid to rest last Saturday in Paso Robles, and John Peaslee was laid to rest last Friday. Both men must have sent rain from the heavens to say their final farewells to so many family and friends who attended the services. Both men will be greatly missed by so many.

Hope you have a great week, enjoy the wonderful weather and the beautiful green grass, and be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected] with any news you’d like to share.
