Big City Hoop Shoot
More than 600 students ranging from 8-to-13 years old tried
their hand in the Big City Hoop Shoot in December at Rancho San
Justo Middle School in Hollister.
The students hailed from five different schools in the area,
including Marguerite Maze, Sacred Heart, Southside, Ladd Lane and
Gabilan Hills.
The Elks Lodge put on the event and crowned six champions,
including Robert Zavialefa of Ladd Lane (8-9, boys), Kieley Hoskins
of Sacred Heart (8-9, girls), Travis Winn of Sacred Heart (10-11,
boys), Kelly McCullough of Sacred Heart (10-11, girls), Michael
Marler of Southside (12-13, boys) and Mary Alameda of Sacred Heart
(12-13, girls).
The winners advanced to the district Hoop Shoot at Maze on Jan.
10, where Winn won the 10- and 11-year-old age group and Hoskins
finished runner-up in the 8- and 9-year-old age group.
Winn will now compete in the upcoming state Hoop Shoot contest
in Carmichael.
Sharks, YMCA start street hockey

The YMCA of San Benito County will be starting the Sharks and Parks Youth Hockey League on Jan. 31 through the NHL Street Program, with games expected to be held on the basketball courts at Veterans Memorial Park in Hollister. The street hockey program, which will be open for boys and girls in grades 6 though 8, is to encourage a love for the game and companionship between players through the teaching of skills, development of positive attitudes about fair play, teamwork and reinforcement of the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

A meet and greet will kick-off the season on Jan. 31, with the first game slated for Feb. 14. The season is scheduled to run through April 4. Practice times and locations will be determined by the coach. A skills assessment will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, at Veterans Memorial Park. Individual program membership is $30 and a family program membership is $55.
