After earning only three wins during last year’s Tri-County Athletic League play - thus becoming the only team not to be listed in the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division at San Benito High - boys soccer coach Tony Deras knew it was going to be a hard climb atop the league.

Behind 20 points from Hyram Miskin and a strong defense, the San Benito boys basketball team improved to 2-0 inside the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division on Wednesday with a 42-26 win over Salinas.

Throughout the first eight games of the year, the San Benito boys soccer team had trouble finishing and putting away teams. Against Christopher on Tuesday, the Balers did just that in a 3-0 win. After a back and forth first half, where neither team could score despite constant pressure on both sides of the field, San Benito took control in the second half.

The San Benito boys basketball team opened the season’s league play Friday with a 62-56 victory over Monterey.

Basketball history has never served the Anzar High girls basketball team very well. Only twice in its history has Anzar been crowned a league champion - the 2008-09 and 2007-08 seasons.

Despite a slow start, the San Benito girls basketball team began its league season on a winning not Thursday, beating Alisal 45-23.

For the second consecutive year the San Benito boys basketball team will enter the league season playing well, as the Balers defeated Watsonville 65-31 in the finale tune up before Friday’s league opener.
