With its second shutout of the year, the San Benito football team showed in its first round win over Alisal that despite a 6-5 record, the Balers are on well their way to redeeming a subpar season.

Things couldn’t have started much worse for the San Benito football team in its Central Coast Section first round game with Alisal on Friday. After a penalty turned back a 40-yard run, the Balers fumbled its second play from scrimmage, giving the Trojans the ball inside the San Benito 20-yard line.

Entering the Balers’ first round Central Coast Section playoff game Friday, the San Benito coaching staff has harped on one common message: Alisal is not the same team the Balers are used to.

After the Anzar football team doubled its win total from its debut season a year ago, the Hawks were rewarded this week with three all-league selections, including the Mission Trail Athletic League’s defensive player of the year.

It seemed that it would be an almost foregone conclusion for San Benito senior Vanessa Estrada that after three years of advancing to the Division I Central Coast Section championship she would finally grab the section title.

One game after winning its first Central Coast Section Division I playoff game, the San Benito girls water polo season ended Saturday in the second round of the postseason with a 21-5 loss to No. 2 seeded Leland.
