San Benito High quarterback R.J. Clark has earned the right to check down plays at the line of scrimmage. In last week’s 21-14 win over Los Gatos, the senior signal-caller made 35 check downs, often with great results.

All but one of the players on the San Benito High field hockey team had prior experience playing the sport before the season started. One would expect the Haybalers to go through some growing pains, but every time they take the field, progress is being made.

Things have come full circle for the Anzar High volleyball team. After struggling for the last two years, the Hawks have showed the 2015 season is going to be a different story. Anzar improved to 4-1 after a five-game win over host North Salinas on Sept. 17.

At 12-3, the San Benito High girls volleyball team is off to its best start since the 2007 season. That year the Haybalers won the Tri-County League championship, advanced to the Central Coast Section Division I final and won their opening match in the CIF Northern California playoffs.

It’s only three games, but the San Benito High football team has made it clear the 2015 season could be a special one. After opening up the year with impressive wins over Hilmar and Palo Alto, the Haybalers recorded their biggest regular-season victory in recent memory in a 21-14 decision over visiting Los Gatos on Friday.

San Benito High junior Brad Sparrer finished fourth in the Junior Tour Northern California Golf Player of the Year standings to earn a berth in the annual Frys.com Open Pro-Junior event, which is held a week before the 2015-16 season-opening PGA Tour event at Silverado’s North Course in Napa.

GILROY—Each time Christopher and San Benito meet in the water, sparks fly and Tuesday’s contest was no different. The Balers got the better of the Cougars this time, winning 11-7 at Christopher High.

After playing No. 1 doubles last year, San Benito High senior Megan Hurley has moved up into the No. 1 singles position this season. The earned promotion hasn’t come without its challenges, as Hurley recently lost a match to Monte Vista Christian’s top player, 6-0, 6-0. However, Hurley has maintained a positive outlook despite having to play against superior competition.

In two games, the Anzar High football team has experienced both ends of the emotional spectrum. When the Hawks beat traditional 8-man power Kings Christian in their season-opener, they were on Cloud Nine. On Friday night, however, they came crashing back to reality in a 58-6 loss to visiting Fresno Christian, which is one of the top 8-man teams in the state.
