Auto Racing: For Lemkes, speed is in the family

In a May 29 race at Madera Speedway, Adam Lemke trailed Jackson Dukes by 12 car lengths with five laps to go in a WSRA Mini Cup event. Lemke’s dad and crew chief, Rodney, let his son know that he was better in turns 1 and 2.

U.S. Open: A spectator’s delight

With media credential in tow, I spent a couple of hours walking the golf course at CordeValle on Thursday for the first round of the U.S. Women’s Open. So what’s the spectator experience for a tournament like this? Pretty enjoyable—and that’s an understatement.

Golf: Brewer-Pozzi uses summer to improve

The days of high school athletes simply relaxing in the summer are long gone. Take incoming San Benito High sophomore Kami Brewer-Pozzi, for example. She recently attended an intensive five-day junior golf camp at Stanford University. The typical day for Pozzi included three to four hours of hitting balls, walking the course and finishing with non-golf games and activities that lasted until 8 or 9 p.m.

Martinez takes the long road, and finds his calling

Frankie Martinez has attended just one semester at the University of Southwest in New Mexico, but he’s already made a huge impact. At the USW athletics banquet, Martinez was named the school’s Overall Athlete of the Year to go along with the Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year honor.

Saddle Horse Show & Rodeo maintains tradition

The more things change, the more they stay the same. That’s a motto the San Benito County Saddle Horse Show & Rodeo lives by, where tradition is paramount and valued perhaps like no other rodeo in the country. To wit: few rodeos have track and arena events going on simultaneously, and even fewer rodeos limit the competitors to people in the local area.

Football: Summer gridiron action

Although high school football games are contested in the fall, the real work goes on in the winter and summer months. That’s when players get bigger, stronger and faster through months of conditioning, strength-training, drills and camps. San Benito High has prided itself on its work ethic over the years, and new coach Bryan Smith has plans to make sure the school’s tradition of outworking their opponents continue.

Baseball: Gillies moving on up

Darrin Gillies could not have asked for a better start to his professional baseball career. On Tuesday night, Gillies was pitching in the Midwest League All-Star Game. The next morning, he was on a flight to join his new team, the Bakersfield Blaze. Gillies went from the low-A level to the high-A ball level in half a season. The timing was fortuitous for Gillies, who still has roots in Hollister.
