Stephanie Starritt of Hollister High barely missed qualifying for the CIF State Track and Field Meet finals in the pole vault last weekend. Starritt vaulted 11-4 on her second attempt on Friday to equal her PR, but couldn’t quite achieve 11-8, which would have qualified her for Saturday’s finals. Starritt, a senior, ended up in a three-way tie for tenth.

“She had a couple of good attempts at 11-8,” said Baler girls track coach Jennifer Logue. “She did really well.”

Hollister’s Naomi Ruiz tossed the discus 104-7 last Friday and did not qualify for Saturday’s finals.

“She had a great season,” said Logue of Ruiz, who was the Central Coast Section champ at 132-2. “I don’t think her injury bothered her. She just had an off day. It was her first time at state and it helps to have been there before.”

Ruiz, a senior, was injured in a school Powder Puff football game on May 30 after winning the CCS title.
