A 7-11 store employee was reported in unstable condition and taken by helicopter to a San Jose trauma center with two stab wounds after a beer theft turned violent Tuesday night.

Gurpreet Singh, 24, chased the suspect out of the store on San Benito Street at about 9:05 p.m. and confronted the suspect, described as a Hispanic male, at the corner of Hawkins and San Benito streets. A fight ensued and Singh was stabbed once in the left leg and once in the upper right arm, according to Hollister police.

Singh then ran to his residence behind the store where emergency personnel attended to his wounds. He was transported to Hazel Hawkins Hospital and later airlifted to San Jose at about 11:50 p.m.

The suspect was last seen fleeing west on Hawkins Street.

“We received a call reporting a stabbing,” Hollister Police Detective Sgt. Ray Wood said. “A beer theft took place and the employee chased a young Hispanic male across the street where an altercation took place and he was stabbed.”

According to 7-11 manager Paul Singh, thefts such as Tuesday night’s occur on a regular basis, usually during Friday nights and on weekends.

“This is the first time someone was stabbed with the knife,” Paul Singh said. “Normally we catch them and hand them over to the police.”
