The Board of Supervisors reorganized Tuesday after Reb Monaco of District 4 and Pat Loe, District 3, were sworn in.
Supervisor Bob Cruz nominated Supervisor Richard Scagliotti as the new chairman, and the vote was unanimous. Cruz was nominated for Vice Chair by Supervisor Ruth Kesler, and again the vote was unanimous.
Loe appointed Margaret Cheney to represent her district on the Historical Heritage Advisory Committee, and Supervisor Monaco appointed Elizabeth Gage for the same committee.
Both newcomers’ choices for the Planning Commission, Gordon Machado (chosen by Loe) and Dennis Madigan (Monaco’s), were also accepted by the board unanimously.
Though the choices for committees weren’t announced, Scagliotti has made his appointments. Of particular note is that Scagliotti and Cruz will continue to serve on LAFCO, the Local Formation Agency Commission, with Loe as an alternate. The newly revived city/county Inter-Governmental Committee will be represented by Scagliotti and Loe.
Outgoing Supervisor Ron Rodrigues, who lost his bid for reelection to Monaco, was honored by representatives from the offices of Senator Bruce McPherson, Congressman Sam Farr and Assemblyman Simon Salinas for his eight years of service to the county. Rodrigues’ fellow supervisors also paid homage to the two-term supervisor – known to constituents and fellow politicians as the “supe with class” — when Scagliotti handed Rodrigues a plaque and commended him for the time he put in on the board.
“We’ve had our ups and downs and a lot of laughs,” said Scagliotti, as he shook Rodrigues’ hand.
From the podium, Rodrigues told the board he enjoyed their friendship and was grateful for the hardworking county administrative staff.
“I’m going to be around,” warned Rodrigues. “I’m not going to move to the desert. I don’t play golf and I don’t play bingo.”
The supervisor, who has many fans in South County, told the audience that he intends to keep working on the cleanup of the New Idria watershed, which has been awash in acid mercury mine drainage for half a century. Monaco named Rodrigues to the soon-to-be formed New Idria Cleanup Advisory Committee.
