Despite some close matches, the San Benito High girls tennis team defeated visiting Everett Alvarez by a seemingly comfortable 6-1 margin Tuesday at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister.
The Lady Balers are now 3-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 6-4 overall.
While the final score may suggest otherwise, San Benito and Everett Alvarez had a pair of tight matches at the top two singles spots, but both went the Lady Balers’ way.
San Benito No. 2 singles player Rachel Smith edged Nia Casad 6-7, 7-6 and 11-9, while No. 1 Lady Baler Hayley Barker defeated Christina Wong 3-6, 7-6 and 10-2 in the third-set tiebreaker.
“She came from way behind in the second set,” San Benito head coach Ed Cecena said of Barker. “She was down several match points and managed to hang in there and win.”
Alvarez’s lone victory came at No. 3 singles where Stephanie Rahiri beat Kristina Slavich 7-5, 6-3. San Benito’s Alex Triolo managed to return the favor, however, when she defeated Tiffany Huynh 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot.
The doubles pairings fared in favor of San Benito as well. Vanessa Casalegno and Chelsea Yoakum remained undefeated at the No. 1 position when they beat Jessica Vo and Camille Herrera 6-1, 6-0; Erin Glasspool and Audrey Marshall followed suit with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Carolyn Bautista and Anne Daquingo; and Olivia Diaz and Alex Garcia defeated Khin Mae and Jessica Wong 6-2, 7-6 to round out the doubles teams.
San Benito will visit Salinas on Thursday. Match time is 4 p.m.
