The Balers struggled in their first tennis match of the year Thursday against Aptos High, losing six games to one game.
The tennis team could only muster one victory during its seven matches against the opening week opponent, Aptos, – and it did not come from the team’s strength of single players.
Number one singles player Ally Triolo, who was playing at the number one slot of the first time, lost in two 6-2 sets to Aptos’ Teagan Knight. San Benito’s Aubrey Marshal also struggled, losing 6-4, 7-5 in straight sets to Kelly McMinn.
The Baler’s Amanda Alvarez dropped two sets, 6-2 and 7-6, to Sani Kanshiger to finish off the Aptos sweep of single matches.
For head coach Ed Cecena it was a tough way to start off the season, but against a good Aptos team, the Balers held their own.
“They are a very good team, Aptos,” Cecena said. “They are probably one of the best from Santa Cruz.”
Despite the losses, Cecena thought it showed the team’s promise and how good they can be.
“We have a lot of work to do, but I think we’ll be able to compete with the teams in our league,” he said.
In the double matches, San Benito was able to squeak out its sole victory with tie-breaking third set.
The pair of Gianna Brigantino and Bernice Bribiesca split the first two sets 3-6, 6-2 before running away with a 10-6 win in the third set.
The team will travel to Presentation High School in San Jose on Wednesday before hosting Carmel High School on Thursday.
