San Benito doubles pairing Vanessa Casalegno and Chelsea Yoakum have just one opponent remaining after the two defeated Salinas’ Kristin Shimizu and Audra Bell 7-6, 7-6 Tuesday at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister.
The visiting Cowboys, meanwhile, edged the Lady Balers 4-3 in Tri-County Athletic League action.
But Salinas’ No. 1 doubles team in Shimizu and Bell posed the biggest threat to Casalegno and Yoakum’s undefeated record. The San Benito senior duo are undefeated this year, were undefeated last year, and had a 5-0 record during their sophomore campaigns.
To date, the two are 41-0 in their high school careers, with each of their 16 victories this season coming in straight sets.
On Thursday, Casalegno, Yoakum and the San Benito Lady Balers will visit Gilroy for the season finale prior to the TCAL Tournament next week.
San Benito lost its No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches, however. Salinas’ Jaime McDonald and Kylie Knowles-Barnett defeated Erin Glaspool and Alex Triolo 7-6, 6-2, while Kaylee Wong and Shelby Weber beat Alex Diaz and Helene Escamilla 6-4, 6-4.
In singles, San Benito dropped the first two matches as Cowboys Taryn Andrews topped Hayley Barker 6-1, 6-2, and Teagan Seeley defeated Rachel Smith 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3, San Benito’s Kristina Slavich beat Claire Varner 7-5, 3-6 and 10-7 in the third-set tiebreaker, and teammate Audrey Marshall followed suit when she defeated Kalah Siegel 3-6, 6-2 and 10-8 in the third-set tiebreaker.
San Benito’s final match of the regular season will be held Thursday in Gilroy at 4 p.m.
