A sports guy’s view of global warming

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Pinnacle has carried a steady stream of articles describing evidence of global warning. Aside from a handful of letters to the editor, the other side of the global warming story has gone untold in this newspaper. John Bagley, Pinnacle’s sports editor, is a devoted consumer of talk radio and conservative commentary. He presents the perspective from the loyal opposition today.

I’m the sports editor of this newspaper so what do I know about global warming and the politics behind it?

Well, I can tell you I do know this. It recently snowed in Malibu. Dallas Texas was hit with two feet of snow a few weeks ago and the crop damage to Central California this winter is now estimated to be in the billions of dollars.

I guess it must be global warming, or as I like to call it global liberalism, at its finest.

How did this global warming thing all get ramped up by the Al Gores of the world anyway? And why has it reached such a frenzied pitch in the last few years?

Quite simply, because it’s a lot easier to sell a 60-degree day in New York City in January than it is to sell a 30-degree day in July in Manhattan. Why? Because it doesn’t happen.

Yet throughout recorded history there have been occasional mild winters in the Northeast for the same reasons that there are occasional freezes in the Deep South. It’s just a normal pattern, the cycle of Mother Earth.

But the left would like you to believe that it’s the big bad USA that’s causing all of this with its ungodly amount of poisonous gases and omissions that are entering the upper atmosphere and destroying the earth’s ability to keep itself cool.

It couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the sun’s activity. That would make too much sense.

Think about it. All of the recent studies say that 2006 was the hottest year ever. But wait; was it even possible to accurately measure the average earth temperature 25, 50, 100 or 1,000 years ago?

Let’s see: the earth is billions of years old, at least according to the Darwinians, and the measured data set is, oh let’s be generous and say it’s 100 years old.

So here’s some high math: 100/ 1e9 = 1e-7 X100 = 0.00001%. Wow, that’s a huge database.

Let’s make sure to draw conclusions from that shall we?

The same comparison applies to the environment the earth sees. Burning fossil fuels may or may not contribute to “climate change”. But when you talk about the earth’s climate what do you think the boundary conditions are? Well there are lots but here’s the big one: the sun! All others are dwarfed to insignificance by that one.

So if the solar flux varies guess what? So does earth’s climate. That’s why these same scientists that are now predicting global warming were predicting a coming ice age in the ’70s.

Nobody was driving big, gas-guzzling 14-mpg SUVs back then. No, the Brady family rode in a big gas guzzling station wagon that got 10 mpg.

So clearly this all has to do with that big bad Hummer in your driveway. And remember it’s only that Hummer or SUV sitting in an American driveway, not one in Europe or Asia.

And what about these projections of the ice caps melting and turning New York City into the next Atlantis… By the way whatever happened to Atlantis? Was that global warming too? Since the USA and the combustion engine weren’t even around back then a liberal wouldn’t even consider going there.

Back to the ice caps, the next time you’re sipping on your favorite beverage in an ice-filled cup note how the water level DOESN’T rise in the glass when the ice melts. Why, because solid water (ice) has a lower density than liquid water (it expands when it freezes). So it floats, and when it melts, the underlying water level does not rise. But somehow we’re being sold the idea that the ice caps melting will bury all coastal cities.

I believe the whole point of global warming fanaticism is partly to undermine the American economy, and to impugn Americans for the choices we make.

If I drive an SUV it’s because I’m selfish and unnecessarily over-utilizing the earth’s resources.

The other part is that doom sells. If the scientists published projections that the world oil supplies will last 300 years at current consumption rates who would care? If they did a study that showed the environment is going to be great, why would they get funding to continue the research? Those funds are these guys’ tickets to retirement. So it would suffice to say that even American scientists would be prone to go along with this global lie. They have families to feed too.

Liberals like to blame the U.S. for global warming for the same reasons that they like to blame it for the war on terror and the situation in Iraq, even though it’s documented fact that the first shot in this war was fired on U.S. soil on 9-11.

Forget about China or any other industrialized nation. The real undercurrent that’s driving this myth is to ultimately impose such high emissions standards that it will ultimately break the economy of the U.S.

Think about it: when California had higher emissions standards than any other state in the nation any new automobile could be purchased for roughly $3,000 less in another state.

Eventually, if some manufacturing company is emitting too many “global warming-related gases” out of its smoke stacks and can’t meet the strictest of emissions standards, which, by the way, only this nation will be forced to follow, the manufacturing will have to take place elsewhere, plants will shutdown and the economy will lesson as the surging population grows.

Can you say Third-World nation in 25 years?
