Certainly no one can complain that there is nothing to do around here this week. A quick glance at the San Benito County Fair program shows a long list of things to see and do at Bolado Park through Oct. 1.
All day and into the night there is enough at the fair to satisfy every age and taste represented in your family. This is your county, and the San Benito County Fair is crammed with local entertainment and exhibits. A glance at the list of fair sponsors also shows that local businesses are part of the flavor. Names like Hollister Auto Parts, RidgeMark, San Benito Bank, Cantina Grill and San Benito Cattle Company grace the program.
Also, your neighbors are putting this thing on, so support them. Every year fair officials count on local volunteers for help setting up and running events. This year, more than 100 local people will help make it happen.
So grab the family, go to the fair, and see people you know. If you are a kid, check out Kids Town. You can get a free pony ride or a ride around the fairgrounds on a miniature train. And don’t forget that today is Kids Day, when anyone younger than 12 is admitted for free.
If you are an adult, or an adult that prefers to act like a kid whenever possible, there are many ways to entertain yourself. For instance, you might want to check out the animal judging, or the Best Dressed Goat contest, or the hypnotist, or Mariachi California, or our personal favorite, the always crazy Demolition Derby.
It’s all there, and it’s all about the small-town atmosphere and rural roots that are the heart, soul and history of San Benito County. And when you compare the cost to, say, taking your family to a Major League baseball game, there is no comparison. You’ll probably come home with some spare change. And the food, don’t forget the food. From fried to fresh, it’s all there.
It’s intimate. There are few county fairs of this size remaining. If you go, you’ll see something that reminds of childhood, and you’ll see neighbors. It’s a good feeling.
“It’s one of the last small-town county fairs and you get to see everybody having a good time,” County Superintendent of Schools Tim Foley said. “And isn’t that exactly why we live in San Benito County?”
That’s right. So get out there, and bring the family.
