The Bay Area was due for another quarterback crisis.

Just as soon as the Oakland Raiders seemed to clear up their quarterback dilemma by finally signing JaMarcus Russell and starting Daunte Culpepper, the 49ers’ Alex Smith went down with a separated shoulder.

I think San Francisco’s sleeper status just overslept.

Sadly, what may right San Francisco’s ship is the same person who’s sinking San Diego down south.

The main ingredients in Norv Turner and a head coaching position, for whatever reason, simply do not mix.

The 49ers enjoyed an impressive offense last season. This season, it’s labeled conservative.

The difference? Turner as the offensive coordinator.

The Chargers had perhaps the best offense in the NFL last season. This season, they can’t buy a point, and just last week, LaDainian Tomlinson’s yards-per-carry was the lowest in the NFL.

The difference? Turner as head coach.

If that makes sense to you, here are three other observations from the week that was:

– A season-ticket holder for the New York Jets has filed a class-action lawsuit against the New England Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick for “deceiving customers” after it was discovered the Patriots had been using a video camera to steal the defensive signals of opposing teams, namely the Jets.

Oy.

After it was discovered, The Commish penalized the Patriots, forcing them to pay $250,000, $500,000 by Belichick, and took away one of their two first-round draft picks next year.

The Jets Superfan, however, has decided to not only go one step beyond Goodell’s penalty, but $184 million beyond it, to be exact.

According to the Associated Press, Superfan Carl Mayer said through his lawyer, Bruce Afran, “They violated the integrity of the game. This is a way of punishing Belichick and the Patriots.”

Mayer and Afran are using New Jersey’s RICO Act to increase the total figures to $184 mill, a total that likely does not include the money wasted to review this ridiculous lawsuit.

And yes, I said RICO Act, the same act the government uses to prosecute those in organized crime.

Now Belichick can be said in the same breath as John Gotti and the Gambino crime family.

Thank you, Jets fans.

– New York Mets manager Willie Randolph finally used his managerial skills this week.

In one of the greatest choke-jobs of all time, Randolph, who couldn’t manage his Mets into the playoffs despite a seven game lead with 17 to play, managed to keep his job for next season.

Personally, I don’t feel Randolph should have been fired, although he should have at least made an attempt at his best Lou Piniella impression somewhere along the line of said choke-job.

But it’s New York. They sue ex-coaches for deception. And since Mets fans were duped into thinking they were playoff-bound, they should at least get a firing to quench their someone-must-pay mentality.

– Staying within the theme of cheaters, TBS’ cameras caught Rockies pitcher Manny Corpas drinking a liquid before he came out of the bullpen Wednesday, and then poured the liquid down the back of his shirt and then again down the front of his shirt.

Corpas got the save in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies, but he patted his liquid-filled jersey before he pitched.

Chicanery? Can we get Corpas on RICO charges?

Pay no attention to the fact that it was 81 degrees in Philadelphia on Wednesday, and the Rockies were in their black road jerseys, and, yeah know, a relief pitcher may get a little hot under the collar in an NLDS save situation. Forget all that.

Where are the Jets fans when you need them? I feel deceived!
