Cheers for FFA; jeers for home prices
The following people, events and organizations deserve either a Thumbs Up or a Thumbs Down this week.

THUMBS UP: For the dialogue about economic development and the future of downtown that has been stimulated in the last week. If there has been any silver lining to the closure of Dorothy McNett’s Place it’s that it grabbed people’s attention and focused it on the need for economic stimulus in Hollister. If we are to thrive as a community, we need to work together to bring businesses into San Benito County. Our residents need jobs. Our merchants need business. And our local governments need revenue to provide valuable community services. Now that the topic is at the forefront of many people’s minds, let’s keep the ball rolling and form a task force to plan our economic future.

THUMBS UP: For the new Future Farmers of America chapter at Anzar High School. Students at the high school have been trying to form a chapter for about three years, but had some trouble because the seniors leading the effort would graduate and move on. This year, however, some juniors got involved and made it happen. This is a great program that teaches leadership and life skills to our youth. And it’s a natural fit for Anzar High which is nestled in the fertile fields of the San Juan Valley.

THUMBS DOWN: For soaring home prices in Hollister. The new median price for a home in our city is $575,000 – an increase of $50,000 in the last six months. While it’s good news for the homeowners – at least until the real estate bubble pops – such dramatic increases are pushing the American dream of home ownership out of reach for the younger generation working in an economy where wages aren’t keeping up with housing costs.

THUMBS UP: For the three San Benito High School athletes who are competing in this weekend’s track and field state finals in Sacramento. The hard work that Amanda Boyd, Jesse Rice and Todd Merrigan have been putting in all season long is paying off in a big way as all three will be competing against the state’s best athletes. We’re sure the community is proud of their success and that San Benito will be cheering them on. Go ‘Balers.
