Thumbs up: San Benito County supervisors made the proactive and wise decision to start the process toward setting up a hearing over the state’s controversial choice for the new courthouse site.

A state agency has chosen the alternative choice of a local site selection committee that had preferred the downtown location at the old Fremont School, owned by the city. The state’s choice of a Flynn road parcel owned by the county leaves a potential for a devastating impact on downtown businesses that depend on daily courthouse activity.

Supervisors by scheduling a hearing – probably for a date in April – can inform the public on the county’s options and gauge what type of oppositional front might be ready to take on the state.

Thumbs up: A local family can, in one way, leave behind the terror caused by Alexandre Hochstraser, who murdered and dismembered former Hollister resident Dolores “Dee” Gonzales. A Santa Clara County judge rightfully sentenced the man to 25 years to life in prison. Hochstraser could be eligible for parole when he is 73 years old.
