Dear Editor,
The county board of supervisors deserves our heartfelt thanks and continued support for their efforts regarding the proposed California Valley Miwok casino. Times such as these demand strong leaders, and our supervisors’ clear stand is very much appreciated.
The response of the casino promoters to the Supervisors’ proposed action gives the lie to the promoters’ claim of being interested in feedback from the local community. They have heard from numerous sources that an overwhelming majority of county residents firmly oppose their project, yet they continue their efforts to ramrod their project through.
Based on their actions, it is clear that the promoters are predators. Despite their soothing words, they see San Benito County as weak and isolated – a tempting prey to their avarice. The board’s willingness to stand up against them shows that we are not weak; Supervisor Pat Loe’s success in starting a region-wide discussion on this issue demonstrates that we are not isolated.
In the coming days, it is likely the supervisors will feel pressure to reverse their direction. From all of us who care so deeply about our community, we ask our supervisors to please stand firm. You are on the right path and your constituents support you.
