Here are five things to do in and around Hollister this weekend:
1. Dog Days of Hollister: Dog Days of Hollister is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Dunne Park. Prizes will be awarded to the dog who: has the best bark, is so ugly they’re cute, has the “waggiest” tail, looks so much like you it’s crazy and does the funniest pet trick. The pooch parade costume contest will award prizes for the best duo or group in costume and most unique costume. We will also crown the King and Queen of Dog Days. In addition to the competitions, a variety of dog and pet-related groups and services will be at the event. We will have “Rescue Row” as well as many breed specific groups. We will have numerous doggie demonstrations happening throughout the day including, herding, protection dog, obedience, rally, and many others. We will also be offering Canine Good Citizen testing.
2. Pacheco State Park’s Eleventh Kite Day: The 11th Annual Family Kite Day will be held at Pacheco State Park, June 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Other fun activities include a “Make Your Own Kite Free” table and free face painting as well as pie eating contests and bubble gum blowing contests. Plus, there will be interesting tables to check out, including nature tables, a sun and wind table and craft tables. Families are encouraged to bring a kite, hats and/or sunscreen, drinking water, lawn chairs and a picnic lunch. It may be cool and windy or very hot. Hot Dog Heaven from Los Banos will sell lunches. 3. Red Barn Run: The Third Annual Red Barn Run is at 8 a.m. Sunday at Casa de Fruta. The event includes a 10K or 5K run walk that will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The entry fee includes a souvenir T-shirt, a barbecue and free beer (for those 21 and older), live music, complimentary leg massages and awards for first, second and third place in each division. 4. Rock ’N Wine series: The inaugural Rock ’N Wine series will begin June 9, at 9Lives nightclub in Gilroy, 7430 Monterey St. the series will combing live music with elements of a traditional wine tasting event. This weekend’s event will feature BIG WOOD, a melodic rock band based in the South Bay that is currently in the student recording a debut album with Billy Squier producer Mack. They will be playing songs from the upcoming album. Special guest Blue Fuse will play after Big Wood, with a selection of popular classic rock songs. The featured wineries this week include Fortino Winery, Solis Winery and Sarah’s Vineyard. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the wine tasting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. BIG WOOD will take the stage at 8:30 p.m., with Blue Fuse taking the stage at 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at www.ninelivesclub.com or at the door.
5. Open Mic Night: Open mic night at Blak Sage Gallery, 727 San Benito St., is Friday and features poetry, stories and music. Come and share your talents or just listen. It starts at 7 p.m.
