Along the Way
Editor,
With the help of Hollister’s finest, Katie Vest won “The Rookie of the Year” and the “All Around Cowgirl” saddle for the senior girls age group 14-18 years old for the Northern California Junior Rodeo Association for 2005. The season ran from February through the finals in September. There were 12 rodeos. Katie qualified for the finals in four events. Barrels, pole bending, goat tying and breakaway roping.
Katie could not have accomplished this feat without the help of some special people here in Hollister.
Katie started taking lessons with Susie Lomanto when she was 6 years old. Katie’s barrel and poles horse was raised and trained by Carl Donley. Carl trained Katie how to ride Annie in the art of barrel racing and pole bending. Mark Stelling provided Katie with goats and also gave her breakaway roping lessons.
Larry and Karen Smith helped her with sponsorship money to cover those expensive entry fees. Charlie Tobias, Dean Bell and John Flook always made sure Katie’s horses were healthy and ready to run.
