In its final meet prior to the Tri-County Athletic League Trials, select members from the San Benito High track and field team will compete this Friday at the 32nd annual CCS “Top 8” Track and Field Classic in Los Gatos — one of the more elite meets in the Central Coast Section.

Two relays and 16 individuals will compete for San Benito at the meet, in what is considered an important precursor to the CCS Championships. Only the top eight — and in some events, the top 16 — qualify to the meet, which will begin 3 p.m. Friday with the varsity discus event.

On the boys’ side, the Balers will bring both their 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams, as well as Emmett King (discus), Enrique Ramos (shot put), Said Hernandez (1,600; 3,200), Jayjoel Fernandez (110 hurdles), Lucas Haro (110 hurdles), Taylor Lothman (400; 300 hurdles), Jose Castillo (800), David Kret (800), Justin Rendon (300 hurdles), Eddie Guzman (3,200), Jason Roascio (200; 400) and Scott Medina (high jump; 400; 300 hurdles).

Last week, in the team’s final dual meet against Salinas, San Benito’s Roascio and Medina experienced discomfort in their shin and foot, respectively. Head coach Iran White pulled Roascio from the meet as a result, and took Medina out of the high-impact hurdles event as well.

On Tuesday, White said the two star athletes plan on running at Top 8, although it could come down to a meet-time decision.

“We’ll see how everyone is feeling come Friday,” said White, who also noted San Benito was experiencing a bout with the “flu bug” this week.

Aside from the bangs and bruises, though, White said Medina and the 4×400 relay team are “pretty excited” to compete this Friday in Los Gatos, as Medina is only 27 one-hundredths of a second off the meet record in the 300 hurdles, while the 1,600-meter relay team stands just 1.39 seconds off the meet record.

Meanwhile, on the girls’ side, four individuals will be making the trip, including Krystal Alnas (discus, shot put), Darian Maroney (100 hurdles), Vanessa Estrada (800) and Megan Pape (3,200).

Alternates at Friday’s meet include Savanna Wilson (long jump), Emmett King (shot put), Vanessa Estrada (1,600), Darian Maroney (300 hurdles), and both the girls 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams.

Field events begin at 3 p.m. with the discus, while track events start at 4:30 p.m. with the girls’ 4×100 relay.
