The San Benito High track and field team nearly ran away with a sweep at the varsity and junior varsity level last week when it hosted Alisal in the Tri-County Athletic League opener.

Although Hollister’s JV boys were narrowly defeated 71-62, the JV girls dominated 108-27, the varsity girls did the same 117-28, and the varsity boys continued the trend with a 93-39 victory.

“It was a good turnout with Alisal,” San Benito High girls varsity coach Laurie Cottrell said. “We just have a much larger team than Alisal.

“It’s the beginning of the year, but everyone is off to a good start.”

Although complete results were unavailable, Cottrell did highlight freshman Melissa Castro, who finished first in the 200, the 300 hurdles and the high jump.

Boys varsity coach Iran White said Justin Williams set a personal record in the 100, with an approximate time of 11.23 seconds.

San Benito is enjoying a bye this week but will return this weekend at the West Valley Relays, which will be held at Westmont High School in Campbell on Saturday at 8 a.m.

The following Thursday, San Benito will return to TCAL action against Everett Alvarez in Salinas at 3:30 p.m.
