GIVING TREE Mark Rianda and David Pierce of the Knights of Columbus San Benito County Council 1792 are selling Christmas trees at St Benedict Catholic Church in Hollister. Proceeds from the sale fund scholarships for local high school students and charitable endeavors across the globe.

The 12 Days of Christmas has officially started this week and for those last-minute shoppers, the Knights of Columbus of San Benito County has an assortment of trees to keep the spirit high and the festivities going.

“We got Douglas Fir from six to 12 feet tall, and some wreaths,” said David Fears, chancellor of the fraternal order that is associated with the Roman Catholic Church. Proceeds from the sale fund scholarships for local high school students who want to pursue higher education and charitable pursuits that are identified by the parish. In addition to St Benedict’s, the local 1792 council is part of Sacred Heart in Hollister, Immaculate Conception in Tres Pinos and the Mission in San Juan Bautista.

“We support whatever projects the priests want help with,” said Fears behind sunglasses, the Hollister sun blazing down. Is it really Christmas in this weather? “We support people with learning disabilities and priests who go to seminary. We also provide scholarships to two students. We are hoping if we have more funds we can give better scholarships.”
