A group of a dozen women met on Tuesday morning as part of the advisory committee to the Community Foundation for San Benito County's Women's Fund with a goal of empowering women and girls in the community.

Local Christmas Tree Farms were hopping on Saturday as residents got in trips to pick out trees in between the heavy storms over the weekend. Bourdet's Christmas Tree Farm will have Santa on site this weekend, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The FFA will have animals in a petting zoo and the Lions Club will be selling food and drinks. Barone's Christmas Tree Farm, on Hillcrest Road, is also open for business for those seeking a tree.

State sales tax rate increases Jan. 1
The statewide sales and use tax rate will increase one quarter of 1 percent from 7.25 percent to 7.5 percent on Jan. 1. This rate increase was approved by California voters when they approved Proposition 30 on Nov. 6.

Shop Hop raffle winners announced
The Holiday Cheer Shop Hop brought out many consumers to local shops in San Benito County on Dec. 1. Local businesses made contributions to the 19 baskets that were raffled off during the shopping day - visitors to the shops had a chance to enter a ticket to win one of the 19 baskets. Kathina Szeto, of San Benito Bene, who helped to organize the event, said at least 89 businesses contributed to the baskets.

Scratched eye isn’t healing
Q: We took Fiber, our terrier, to the vet for an injury to his eye. He scratched his cornea running after a ball in the bushes. The vet gave us some antibiotic ointment to put in his eye once or twice a day. But he’s not getting any better. The vet wants to see him again to do some tests and we’re not sure what to do. Should we take him to a specialist? Why isn’t the eye getting better?
