The California Highway Patrol has released more details on the Saturday night accident resulting in the death of a 17-year-old Hollister resident and accused the victim of illegally passing vehicles before the incident.
The San Benito County Sheriff’s Office earlier Monday identified the victim in Saturday night’s fatal accident on Highway 25 as 17-year-old Giovanni Fidel Gonzalez of Hollister.
The fatality involving the motorcycle rider was reported at 7:45 p.m. Saturday between Flynn Road and Highway 156 along the rural commuter highway near Hollister.
The Hollister Fire Department confirmed the fatality victim was riding a motorcycle and that another vehicle caught fire in the incident. Two people were transported to a hospital as well.
The California Highway Patrol shortly after 5 p.m. Monday released more information in a press release. According to the CHP, the accident involved the victim on a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle.
The CHP reported that the motorcycle rider had been southbound on Highway 25 south of Highway 156 and accused him of traveling at a high rate of speed, according to the statement.
According to the CHP statement: “Several witnesses reported that the driver of the motorcycle was passing multiple vehicles over the double yellow lines, just prior to the collision. For an unknown reason, the driver of the motorcycle lost control of the motorcycle and went onto the opposing lane of traffic where the motorcycle driver and the motorcycle collided with a vehicle in the northbound lane.”
The CHP reported it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved and that the victim died on the scene.
