Zachary Barrios, a seventh-grader from Southside School, was the winner of the 2014 VFW Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest for San Benito County. His essay on “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans” was judged first out of 75 entries. His essay, along with those from runners-up Sean Slavich and Christina Peterson from Sacred Heart School, were forwarded to the 12th District (which covers an area from South San Francisco to King City) for the next level of competition.
Zachary received a check for $100 from VFW Post 9242. Both the VFW and American Legion Posts are encouraging all veterans, but particularly Iraq and Afghanistan vets, to visit either organization to see what they can offer in comradeship and benefits information.
