The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9242 announced the winner of the 2015 Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest.
Malia Chang, an eighth-grade student at Spring Grove School, wrote an essay titled, “What Freedom Means to Me.” She was judged first place out of more than 35 entries in the contest. Her essay was forwarded to the 12th District for the next level of competition. That district includes an area from South San Francisco to King City in southern Monterey County.
Chang will receive a check for $200 for being the winner of the VFW’s Post 9242 contest. Dylan Yearton and fellow student Kenna Casillas from Spring Grove, along with fellow runners up Dida Corona from Cienega School and Zachary Barrios from Southside School, will each receive a $25 check. Writers on all of the essays submitted in the contest will receive certificates of merit from the group.
