It was an up-and-down first week for the San Benito High girls volleyball team, but the team of 12 girls showed the ability to mount a comeback anytime in its 3-3 week.

The season started with a roaring finish for the Balers. After dropping the first game 25-5 to Harbor, San Benito quickly fought back with back-to-back wins.

In the second game, the Balers snuck by Harbor with a 29-27 victory. At one point the Balers led 9-3, but Harbor charged back only to have the Balers finish them off.

“It showed we have a lot of toughness out there,” head coach Dean Askanas.

After Harbor won game four – evening the match at two wins each – San Benito dominated the final game 15-10.

Katherine Breger and Ellie Burley were the stars offensively, while Raelynn Heredia protected the defensive end.

“They did a great job,” Askanas said.

The momentum continued Saturday for the Balers at the Milpitas Spikefest. The Balers came back again to win the firs match 2-1 over Burlingame.

But falling behind early caught up the Balers over the next three matches, losing 2-0 to St. Francis, 2-0 to St. Ignatius College Prep and 21 to Menlo Atherton.

“Those are some really great schools,” Askanas said. “I’m proud of the way they played.”

The Balers finished off the tournament with a 2-1 win over Notre Dame.

The team will have to follow the .500 weekend with a tough three-game schedule. The Balers will travel to Aptos on Tuesday, Homestead on Thursday and Carlmont on Sept. 13.

“It’s a tough three games ahead of us,” he said. “I hope we continue to improve.”
