Behind 14 kills from Denisia Dikes and 25 digs from Sam Klauer, the San Benito High girls volleyball team swept host Alisal in three games (25-12, 25-8, 25-10) on Thursday night in Tri-County Athletic League action.

The win puts the Lady Balers a game over .500 in the TCAL at 4-3, 14-12 overall.

Setter Alisha Cornick added 25 assists for San Benito, while Sara Yamasaki had 16 digs and four aces. But head coach Dean Askanas highlighted the 14 kills by Dikes, who moved to the left-side hitter position on Thursday night, joining Jessica Meade.

“It was very effective,” Askanas said. “It’s the most important hitting position — the left side. I think Denisia will be a big difference for us.

“They both can bring a lot of power from the left and they’re both really strong.”

As a result, the switch moved outside hitter Kelsie Asp to the right side.

“Kelsie is a very consistent hitter,” the coach said, “which works on the right side because usually defenses aren’t ready for a right-side hit.”

Asp had three kills Thursday against Alisal, while Meade supplied the Lady Balers with eight kills and four aces.

Askanas called the move “very encouraging,” even though Alisal is struggling this season at 1-6 in the TCAL.

“I can tell when we’re playing good and when we’re not,” Askanas said. “I’m hoping it’s gonna be a very effective switch. It was tonight.”

San Benito will return to Hollister on Tuesday against North Salinas. Match time is 6:30 p.m.
