Keeping pace with undefeated Cabrillo College, the Gavilan College women’s volleyball team dispatched visiting Monterey Peninsula College on Wednesday night in Gilroy, downing the Lobos in four sets (25-19, 25-10, 21-25, 25-23).

With the win, the Rams improve to 13-5 overall, 6-1 in the Coast Conference, and remain one game behind Cabrillo College in the loss column.

Cabrillo previously defeated Monterey Peninsula College in three sets earlier this season. Cabrillo and Gavilan will meet up next Wednesday in Aptos at 6:30 p.m.

Against MPC, the Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Lobos responded with a third-set win.

Emily Tonascia connected on a match-high 12 kills and added five blocks on the night. Melissa Avila contributed 32 assists and a team-high 23 digs, while Shayna Nakata chimed in with 20 digs.

Before their rematch with Cabrillo next Wednesday, though, the Rams will square off against Chabot College in Hayward on Friday night.

Match time is 6:30 p.m.

Earlier this season, Gavilan swept Chabot in three sets.
