A shorthanded Gavilan College women’s volleyball team finished in a program-best fourth place at the Delta College Classic over the weekend in Stockton.

The Rams had just nine players available for the two-day tournament, and were without sophomore outside hitter Kayce Skocko, who was battling a high temperature.

“We had great production from a bunch of the girls, though,” Rams coach Kevin Kramer said.

Gavilan won its first two matches – 18-25, 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 15-9 over Sacramento City College and 26-24, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22 against Diablo Valley College to reach the semifinals.

Freshman setter Sabina Gerard, who was named to the All-Tournament team, recorded 38 assists and 47 assists in the first two matches, respectively. Tasmin Apple contributed 21 kills versus Diablo Valley, and Kayondra Hood had 30 digs against Sacramento City.

In the semifinals against Feather River, the Rams sprinted to a one-set lead before dropping the next three. Gavilan also fell in the third-place match to Sierra College.

The Rams host the third installment of the Gavilan College Classic this Friday. Taft College and Allen Hancock College are the other two teams. Play begins at 11 a.m. at Gavilan.
