SOLEDAD
The Anzar High girls volleyball team won its second straight match last Thursday at Soledad, where it defeated the host Aztecs in five games (29-27, 20-25, 12-25, 25-21, 17-15).
Alex Flores led the Hawks with 20 kills, 19 digs and four aces, while Averi Pavese supplied 16 digs and three aces for Anzar, which improves to 3-3 in the Mission Trail Athletic League, 8-9 overall.
Carly Johnson had 35 assists in the five-game victory.
“It was definitely not what we were expecting,” Anzar head coach Jennifer Daughenbaugh said.
The head coach noted that Gonzales, a team the Hawks swept in three games last Tuesday, beat Soledad in three games.
“But I think the thing that got us at the end of the day was that they played at a slower pace,” Daughenbaugh said. “We played at their pace instead of playing at our own pace. It got us off rhythm.
“Thank goodness we pulled it off.”
Jessica Stofer had eight kills and four aces for Anzar, while teammate Nicole Mello added 16 digs.
The Hawks will visit Santa Catalina Tuesday at 6 p.m.
