After a decent showing at the Mount Madonna Invitational last weekend, the Anzar High girls volleyball couldn’t continue its strong play Tuesday night against King City, as the visiting Mustangs defeated the Hawks in four games (25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 25-13) in San Juan Bautista.
Alex Flores led the Hawks with 14 kills and Camille Merz contributed five. Running its 6-2 offense, which utilizes two setters, Anzar’s Carly Johnson had 13 assists while Sydnee Masuen added eight.
“But I think nerves got the best of them,” Anzar head coach Jennifer Daughenbaugh said.
The Hawks have not defeated King City since Oct. 11, 2007.
After the match, though, Daughenbaugh felt her team could beat King City, and was gearing up for the next time the two teams will meet – Oct. 22 in King City.
For the Hawks to emerge victorious, though, Anzar will need to find consistency from behind the service line. Although the Hawks delivered 11 aces Tuesday, they also compiled 14 service errors.
Additionally, the Hawks had eight blocking errors to just two blocks that garnered a point.
“But watching King City and knowing what my team can do, we could beat them,” Daughenbaugh said. “But again, it’s the serving and more hitting has to go on.”
Anzar (1-2 MTAL, 6-8 overall) will visit Carmel Thursday night at 6 p.m.
