The San Benito High girls volleyball team compiled a 3-2 record last weekend at Spikefest II in Milpitas, defeating Monta Vista, Independence and Crystal Springs, but falling to Mount Pleasant and Lynbrook.

Scores were not reported.

San Benito is now 19-16 overall and guaranteed to finish above .500 on the season with just one match remaining — Thursday’s regular-season finale at Notre Dame — prior to the Central Coast Section playoffs.

Head coach Dean Askanas was disappointed with the loss to Mount Pleasant, a team the Lady Balers had twice defeated already this season. Furthermore, a third victory over Mount Pleasant would have advanced San Benito in the Spikefest tournament to play Carlmont, “which we may see in the playoffs,” Askanas said.

“We’re having a hard time turning it around,” the head coach added.

Askanas did note the victory over Monta Vista, which is expected to be a league champion this season, while the last match against Crystal Springs showed signs of progress.

“I think we started to do some good things again,” Askanas said. “We’ve already qualified to CCS. Now it’s time to throw caution to the wind, start swinging hard and see what comes of it.”

The Lady Balers, at 6-5 in the Tri-County Athletic League, will return to league action on Thursday against Notre Dame. Match time is 6:30 p.m., in Salinas.
