After dispatching visiting Alisal in three games on Tuesday, the San Benito High girls volleyball team suffered a disappointing four-game loss at North Salinas on Thursday night, the team’s first defeat in the Tri-County Athletic League this season.

The Lady Balers are now 1-1 in the TCAL, 9-7 overall.

“We just were really mentally weak,” San Benito head coach Dean Askanas said. “It was mental errors and players were not used to coming through in the clutch.

“Some of them mentally dropped the ball. I think they have the physical tools, but mentally they have to learn how to win.”

Jessica Meade led the Lady Balers with 13 kills on Thursday, while Sam Klauer had 36 digs.

Although San Benito lost in four games, scores were not reported. Askanas said the games were all close.

With 10 league games remaining, the head coach said the team has “a lot of proving to do.”

“And it’s about getting out there and doing it,” he said.

San Benito will look to rebound when it hosts Everett Alvarez on Tuesday. Match time is 6:30 p.m.
