SALINAS
Despite strong defensive performances from Sam Klauer and Mari Vallejo, the San Benito High girls volleyball team was swept by host Salinas Thursday night in three games (21-25, 15-25, 19-25).
Klauer had 30 digs and Vallejo had 15 digs for the Lady Balers, which fall to 2-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 10-8 overall.
Jessica Meade had a team-high eight kills for San Benito, while Raelynne Heredia and Alisha Cornick had eight and seven assists, respectively.
While San Benito head coach Dean Askanas was pleased with the defense, especially Klauer’s 30 digs – “Which is a ton of digs,” he said – the Lady Balers struggled offensively on Thursday night against an undefeated Cowboys team.
“They’re good,” Askanas said of Salinas.
“But again, we’re not producing enough offense and that’s where we’re getting hurt. We’re not producing enough efficiently.”
Before two league games next week against Gilroy and Notre Dame, the Lady Balers will look to find momentum this weekend at a tournament in Menlo. San Benito, which went 0-5 at this same tournament last season, will open with Menlo at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
“Hopefully, we’ll do better this year and get some wins,” Askanas said. “We can always work on producing more. We just need to keep improving.”
